Which launch monitor to buy: pick it by the number you want, not the budget

The right launch monitor depends on the one number you plan to act on. Carry and ball speed need the least hardware. Indoor spin costs a marked ball or a camera. Club path costs $1,599 and up. Face angle is estimated or absent on nearly everything affordable. The fee tier, not the sticker, sets what you pay.

Which number should narrow your shortlist?

The number you plan to act on determines the type of unit you need, which determines the price. A golfer who wants only carry and ball speed can stop at $500. A golfer who wants measured club path is looking at the Square Omni, the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite or the SkyTrak+, $1,599 to $2,995. A golfer who wants impact location under the Garmin R50 has two doors, the Mevo Gen2 with an add on that carries a light requirement, or the Omni.

Start with the number and the list shortens itself. If you will never read a club delivery number (path, face angle, attack angle), you do not need a unit that reports one. A $500 radar monitor gives you ball speed, estimated carry, and launch angle. That is enough to build a yardage card and track trends.

For each: which units produce it (measured, not estimated), the condition that rides along, and what the fee ladder does to the sticker price.

Which launch monitors give you trustworthy carry and ball speed?

Outdoors with room to fly the ball, the three units in the $500 to $700 tier post a carry worth writing down, and every unit on this page posts a reliable ball speed. Ball speed is the one number that does not lean on a flight model, which makes it the cleanest metric for comparing sessions. On the camera units, carry is a flight model output at any price, which is why the accuracy tool files it as a hint rather than a measurement.

At that tier the Garmin R10, the Rapsodo MLM2PRO and the Voice Caddie SC4 Pro all post that carry with nothing paid, and the separator is what the money keeps buying after day one: the R10's range side is free and its $99.99 a year membership is the Home Tee Hero course library; the MLM2PRO's spin wants its RPT balls and its club data sits behind Premium at $199.99 a year; the SC4 Pro's pitch is the on unit screen with nothing required. If you will never read a club number, $500 is the right buy, and nobody in a forum should talk you up to $1,600 for metrics you did not ask for.

Carry indoors is a different story. Radar units model spin when there is not enough ball flight, and carry follows the model. On a simulator, carry is the honest number (total depends on the firmness the software models), so plan your gapping off carry. Which units measure spin you can trust indoors?

A camera unit measures spin at impact by reading the ball surface, so its spin number holds indoors. A radar unit models spin indoors unless the ball is marked, and modeled spin is why indoor carry reads short.

The MLM2PRO reports no spin without its RPT balls, about $70 a dozen. The Mevo Gen2 models spin indoors unless the ball carries aluminum dots or is a Titleist RCT ball. A marked ball is an ongoing line item, not a one time buy.

Photometric units read spin off a plain ball: the Uneekor Eye Mini family, the Foresight GC3, the Bushnell Launch Pro family and the SkyTrak+. The Square Home reads it with the dotted balls it ships with or TaylorMade PIX and estimates it otherwise, so a Home owner budgets for marked balls the same way a radar owner does; the Square Omni reads spin off any ball. If you plan to practice on a simulator where spin determines how the ball stops on the green, you need either a camera unit or a budget for marked balls.

Backspin reference (Trackman tour averages): driver roughly 2,000 to 3,000 rpm, 7 iron roughly 6,000 to 7,500 rpm, wedge roughly 9,000 to 11,500 rpm. A 7 iron reading 3,500 rpm is low, and low iron spin is usually a strike problem before it is a machine problem. On a unit that wants a marked ball, the free arbiter is the ball swap: ten with the marked ball and ten with your gamer in one session, and if the spin figure moves with the ball, it is the measurement.

Which launch monitors measure club path and attack angle?

Three units on this page measure club path at affordable money, the Square Omni, the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite and the SkyTrak+, and none of them is the high end. Path and attack angle tell you how the club moves through impact and, combined with face angle, explain why the ball curves.

The Square Omni at $1,599 is the cheapest unit on this page that measures path and attack angle, with the shaft sticker on. The Eye Mini Lite at $1,999 does the same with its club stickers and has a longer record in the wild. Neither measures face angle.

Which launch monitors actually measure face angle?

Face angle is estimated or absent on nearly everything affordable. This is the number most buyers think they are buying and mostly are not.

Without measured face angle, you read face from the flight. Start line is mostly face, and the curve is the gap between face and path. If you want face angle measured below $3,000, the SkyTrak+ is where the accuracy tool sends you; above that the next step is the GCQuad tier with its club markers, then Trackman.

Without face angle you can still coach from the flight. Start line tells you where the face pointed. Curve tells you how far face and path disagreed.

Which units report impact location?

Two units under the Garmin R50 report impact location: the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 with its Face Impact Location add on, and the Square Omni. Ball data on its own cannot show where on the face you struck it, which is why the number costs extra.

The Mevo Gen2 ($1,299) offers Face Impact Location as a $299 add on ($499 list, currently on sale). It is non refundable, and FlightScope publish a light requirement for it on the add on's own page: a consistent reading above 300 lux within a 3 foot radius of the hitting spot. Put a light meter app on the spot before buying. The Mevo is also radar, so indoors it wants 7 to 9 feet from unit to ball plus at least 8 feet of ball flight, 15 to 17 feet of floor.

The Square Omni lists impact location on its feature sheet. Few units are in the wild as of late August 2026, and nobody can say how accurate its impact number is against a unit with a longer testing record. The GC3 and Bushnell Launch Pro family (same three camera hardware as the GC3) carry years of independent testing but do not report impact location.

Fix contact before buying a unit to chase delivery numbers. An off center hit skews path and face reads, so the contact problem corrupts the data you are spending money to get. Foot spray on the club face costs a few dollars and answers the question immediately.

What does the fee ladder do to the real price?

Two units at the same hardware price and $300 a year apart in fees are $1,800 apart at six years. That gap is wider than the sticker gap between most units. Price the tier that opens the software you will run, not the hardware.

GSPro costs $250 a year regardless of which unit you connect, so it cancels out when comparing units. The fee that varies is the one the manufacturer charges to unlock the software tier you need.

Prices verified August 2026 on each manufacturer's page; the SC4 Pro and MLM2PRO rows note what the maker pages showed on September 2. Bushnell hardware price omitted because maker and retailer pages disagreed. The Bushnell Launch Pro family (Circle B) uses the same three camera hardware as the Foresight GC3. The LPi is indoor only with no screen and no battery.

Bushnell Silver at $199 a year looks like a bargain until you realize it does not open third party software. Anyone who buys a Bushnell monitor planning to run GSPro needs Gold at $499 a year. Over six years that is $3,000 in fees before GSPro's own $250 a year.

Uneekor opens third party software at the Pro tier for $199 a year. The Eye Mini Lite at $1,999 plus Pro at $199 plus GSPro at $250 totals $2,448 in year one and $449 each year after. Compare that to the Square Omni at $1,599 with no manufacturer fee: $1,849 in year one and $250 a year after. The $400 hardware gap becomes a $600 year one gap because of the fee.

What does a camera setup look like in a real garage?

I hit into an Uneekor Eye Mini Lite running GSPro in a garage shared with two cars, and have since December 2024. I chose a camera over radar because a camera captures at impact and needs far less indoor flight space. The full room depth comparison is in Budget golf simulator build priorities.

The unit sits on the floor beside the ball on a level surface. No battery. A 20V power lead runs to a box at ball height. Reflective stickers go on the club for club data. Before every session I laser align the unit as a step in a 5 to 10 minute rebuild (the cars need the space back).

My unit reports no face angle, so I cannot measure the thing I was chasing when I first started looking at club delivery data. Instead I read face from spin axis against path. Start line tells me where the face pointed. The curve tells me how far face and path disagreed. That inference, combined with the path and attack angle the stickers give me, is enough to identify the pattern I need to work on next.

Which launch monitors measure club path under $2,000?

Two on this page. The Square Omni at $1,599 measures club path and attack angle with the shaft sticker on, and adds club head speed and smash. The Uneekor Eye Mini Lite at $1,999 measures club speed, attack angle and club path with its reflective club stickers. Neither reports face angle: the Omni estimates it and the Eye Mini Lite never produces it. Check your exact setup on the accuracy tool before you count on any delivery number.

Do I actually need impact location?

Most golfers benefit more from carry, spin, and path data than from impact location. Ball data alone cannot show where on the face you struck it. An off center hit skews path and face reads, so fixing contact matters more than measuring where the contact happened. Impact location is useful once your strike is consistent, but it is not the number most golfers should chase first.

Which launch monitors have no subscription fee for GSPro?

The Square Home and Square Omni connect to GSPro with no manufacturer fee, the OpenLaunch Nova charges nothing after the $1,500, the Garmin R10's range side is free, and the Foresight GC3 has no subscription at all. The Uneekor Eye Mini Lite needs the Pro tier at $199 a year and Bushnell needs Gold at $499 a year before either will talk to GSPro. GSPro's own $250 a year sits on top of every unit equally.

Does a camera unit need less room than radar?

Yes, on depth. A camera unit reads the launch window beside the ball, so what it needs is side clearance and the ball in the same spot every time rather than a long runway, and the ball still has to reach a net or screen a few feet ahead. The Mevo Gen2, a radar unit, wants 7 to 9 feet from unit to ball plus at least 8 feet of ball flight, 15 to 17 feet of floor. The room numbers for a whole build are on the budget page.

Is the Square Omni as accurate as a Foresight GC3?

Nobody can say yet. The Omni is on backorder as of late August 2026 with preorders shipping in order, so few units are in the wild. The GC3 carries years of independent testing. The Omni buyer trades a tested record for a promise at about a quarter of the GC3 list price. That can be the right trade, but only if the buyer knows which trade it is. Availability is a spec.
