Budget golf simulator build priorities: where the money actually matters

In a budget simulator build, spend on the mat before the monitor, measure the room before you pick a technology, and save the projector for last. The order is net, mat, launch monitor, software, then screen. That sequence protects your body, protects your data, and makes sure every dollar builds on the one before it.

What should I spend my money on first in a budget golf simulator build?

The mat. Most builders fixate on the launch monitor, but the mat is the piece your body feels on every swing. A hard mat teaches you to pick the ball clean instead of taking a divot. It punishes your wrists. And because it changes your angle of attack, it corrupts the data the launch monitor exists to collect. Nobody regrets buying the good mat.

The order of operations: what to buy and when

  3. Launch monitor. Measure your room depth first, then pick the monitor to fit. Radar wants room, cameras want inches (details in the next section). Budget the whole system: the box, the balls, the subscription, everything.
  4. Simulator software. Start on the monitor's own free app. When the room is proven and the data is trustworthy, add GSPro ($250 a year), the community standard for course realism.
  5. Screen and projector. A used 1080p projector or a TV you already own is the correct budget screen. The projector upgrade adds immersion but adds zero accuracy. Every dollar here is cosmetic until the data chain is solid.

Distance without stopping power is not distance, and data you cannot trust is worse than no data. That is why the mat and the monitor placement come before anything cosmetic.

Should I pick a radar or camera launch monitor?

Measure your room depth first. The room decides the technology, not the other way round.

Radar units (like the Garmin R10) need to watch the ball fly. Garmin's own manual specifies 6 to 8 feet behind the ball and at least 8 feet from ball to net indoors. That is 14 to 16 feet of depth before you account for standing room. The front number (ball to net) is the one that kills most garages.
Camera units that sit next to the ball (the Square Golf Home is the budget example) only need to see impact. They fit rooms that radar simply cannot. If your garage or basement is under 16 feet deep, a camera unit is probably the only option.

There is a tradeoff beyond room size, and the category labels hide fine print at the budget end. Some photometric units genuinely measure club delivery where radar estimates it, but the Square Golf Home reports no club head speed at all, real spin on the MLM2Pro needs the marked balls, and the R10's club numbers are radar estimates. Outdoor daylight flips the rule. Direct sun blinds camera units and washes out projectors. If you plan to hit outdoors in daylight, a radar unit and maybe a TV in the shade is the way to go. The room constraint that favors cameras indoors disappears outside, and the sunlight constraint that favors radar takes over.

Why does the mat matter more than the launch monitor?

Because a bad mat changes your swing, and a changed swing produces bad data. The launch monitor faithfully records what you do. If the mat forces a different move than grass would, the monitor is collecting accurate measurements of the wrong swing.

A hard or worn hitting surface teaches compensations. You learn to pick the ball clean because hitting down hurts. Your angle of attack gets shallower. Your wrist impact increases. Over hundreds of swings, those compensations become habits that follow you to the course.

With a 7 iron on a proper surface, you should see a descending angle of attack that produces a descent angle in the 45 to 50 degree range (per Trackman tour averages). That is what holds greens. Sub 40 degrees runs out. A hard mat that discourages hitting down shifts those numbers, and now you are practicing a ball flight that will not stop on an actual green.

The SIGPRO Softy is not the only quality mat on the market, but its replaceable hitting strip is the feature that makes it a budget priority. When the surface wears, you replace a $250 strip instead of a $1,000 mat.

Do not pay twice for spin: budget the whole system

The sticker price of a launch monitor is not the total cost. Some units require specific balls, subscriptions, or both before they deliver their full data set. Budget the whole system, not the box.

The Rapsodo MLM2Pro lists at $699. Its real measured spin requires marked RPT balls at about $70 a dozen. Deeper club data (club path, face angle) lives behind a Premium membership at $199.99 a year. A full first year with the MLM2Pro, balls, and Premium runs closer to $970.

The Garmin R10 at $499.99 includes a free app with no required subscription. Home Tee Hero, the optional course play add on, is $99.99 a year. A full first year is $500 to $600.

The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro at $499 has an on unit screen and no required subscription. What you see on the shelf is what you pay.

None of these prices are bad. They just need to be budgeted honestly so the monitor does not eat dollars that should have gone to the mat.

How do I know if my simulator data is trustworthy?

Start with the numbers you can sanity check against known benchmarks. On a simulator, carry is the honest number (total depends on the firmness the software models), so plan your gapping and your expectations off carry distances.
