Golf swing speed: real numbers, and whether speed training works

By Trackman's published averages, PGA Tour players swing a driver at about 115 mph and the average male amateur swings about 94. The speed number only matters for what it produces: ball speed, the carry window that ball speed is worth, and whether it grows without costing you strike.

What is a good golf swing speed?

There is no single "good" number. Speed is a fitness and technique number, not a talent verdict. Only about 18 mph separates a bogey golfer from a scratch amateur, and handicap depends on far more than the driver swing. The honest anchors for tour and amateur swing speeds come from Trackman's published tour averages and Trackman Combine amateur data (checked August 2026).

Club speed, ball speed, smash factor: which number matters?

Club speed is the input. Ball speed is the output. Smash factor tells you how efficiently the strike converts one into the other. All three matter, but ball speed is the number that actually flies the ball.

Club speed. How fast the clubhead is moving at impact, measured in mph. This is the number speed training targets. It sets the ceiling for ball speed, but only a clean strike reaches that ceiling.
Ball speed. How fast the ball leaves the face. This is the output that determines carry distance. Ball speed is club speed multiplied by smash factor, so it reflects both your speed and your strike quality in a single number.
Smash factor. Ball speed divided by club speed. A well struck driver runs 1.45 to 1.50, with 1.50 the practical ceiling. Below about 1.45, the driver is bleeding ball speed, the signature of a glancing or off center strike. A club speed gain that drops smash can be a wash, so the honest progress pair is club speed AND ball speed together.

One iron caveat: smash factor norms are club dependent. A 7 iron smash around 1.33 is normal. A 7 iron reading 1.40 or above usually flags a thin or delofted strike, not a better one.

How much carry is my swing speed worth?

The Trackman carry optimizer shows the carry distance available at each ball speed when launch angle and spin are optimized. The table below gives three sets of launch, spin, and carry for each ball speed, one set per angle of attack (5 degrees down, level, and 5 degrees up).

Two reads ride with that table. First, each 5 degrees of attack angle is worth roughly 12 to 13 yards of carry at the same ball speed. That is free headroom to grow into, never a mandate to chase at the cost of strike. Second, the rows work out to about 2 yards of carry per mph of ball speed, roughly 10 yards per 5 mph, at level attack angle. Trackman's own club speed page adds that 1 mph of club speed can be worth up to 3 yards with the driver, which is the same arithmetic passed through a healthy smash factor.

Does speed training actually work?

Speed training means overspeed and weighted club protocols swung as training, away from scoring golf. It is a gym exercise for your swing, not a playing strategy.

Speed training does not cost you touch, because speed is built away from the course while the scoring swing stays where it is. Nobody loses their game from 100 yards in because they got faster.

The honest caveat: speed training vendors publish their own gain numbers, and this page quotes none of them. Your launch monitor is how you audit a protocol on your own swing. The numbers you watch while training are club speed trending up, smash factor holding its band, and the start line window not exploding.

Speed raises the cost of curve. The same axis tilt curves a 108 mph drive much farther offline than a 90 mph one. That is why speed work pairs naturally with monitoring a start line window. If you are gaining speed but your dispersion is widening, you have a delivery problem to solve alongside the speed gain, not a reason to stop training speed.

Do I need a softer ball for a slower swing?

Matching compression to swing speed is one of the most oversold ideas in fitting.

Modern robot testing shows compression barely moves distance for most players, and firmer tour balls have actually tested longest for slower swings. The cover (urethane or ionomer) decides performance around the green first, and compression is mostly a feel choice. How to track speed gains without fooling yourself

Speed gains are real only if you can measure them repeatably. The protocol below gives you a baseline you can trust and a retest loop that separates real progress from noise.

  1. Hit a ten ball baseline. Use the same club and the same ball model. Record club speed, ball speed, and smash factor for each shot. Average all three numbers. This is your starting point.
  2. Know what your unit actually measures. Confirm whether your launch monitor measures club speed directly or estimates it. Garmin publishes club speed accuracy to 3 mph and ball speed to 1 mph. Most camera units want their club stickers on before they report club data at all.
  3. Retest weekly under the same conditions. Same club, same ball model, same warm up routine. Outdoor testers should note temperature and altitude. Indoor testers should keep mat position and ball tee height consistent.
  4. Judge on the pair, not the headline number. Read club speed AND smash factor together, plus the carry window. A jump in club speed with falling smash can be a wash instead of a gain, so let ball speed make the call. Progress means club speed trending up while smash holds its band and your start line window stays stable.
