A golf dispersion chart plots where your shots actually finish with one club, short to long and left to right. Read two things from it: the center, which is your real number, and the spread, which is your consistency. The spread decides which gaps in your bag are real and which targets you can honestly attack.
Dispersion chart: a plot of shot finish positions for one club. The depth axis is carry distance. The side axis is offline distance, left or right of the target line. Ten shots make a picture. One shot makes an anecdote.
Dispersion in golf is the shape of that cloud, not any single dot in it. Think of it as a scatter plot with you at the origin. Every dot is one swing's outcome. The shape of the cloud tells you things a single carry number never can: how wide your spread is, whether your center is actually where you think it is, and whether your misses cluster to one side.
A single average carry number hides all of this. Two golfers can both "carry" a 7 iron 165 yards and have completely different charts. One has a tight oval centered on the target. The other has a wide spray with the center drifting right. The dispersion chart makes that difference visible.
You need ten or more shots with one club at one target. More is better, but here is the minimum that works.
A note on sample size. Three shots is the minimum before any scatter number means anything. Five to ten is where the picture starts being worth trusting. Below three, any statistic you compute is noise.
One important distinction to state plainly: for a single playing number (what carry distance do I tell someone I hit this club?), a trimmed average that drops the best and worst shot resists outliers. But for the scatter itself you keep everything, because the spread IS the measurement. The outlier is the data.
The spread is your consistency. Where the center of the cloud sits against your aim is your correctness. Those are different axes, and dispersion alone cannot tell them apart.
A tight scatter chart looks good. But tight and wrong is still wrong. From my own graded session data: the tightest driver set from one of my sessions, with a spin axis sigma of 8.5 degrees and carry sigma of 13.6 yards, was also my worst set. It was a consistently open face averaging plus 19.6 spin axis. Reading dispersion by itself would have graded it the best set of the day.
So pair the scatter with a direction number. Spin axis works. Start line works. The point is that you need both the shape of the cloud and where it points. Dispersion tells you how repeatable you are. A direction metric tells you whether that repeatability is aimed somewhere useful.

That is roughly a factor of four between the test professional and the rule of thumb. Most golfers reading this sit somewhere between. We have not found a lateral benchmark we trust enough to print, so treat left to right spread qualitatively for now.

Two clubs are different shots only when the gap between them is wider than the shot to shot scatter of the pair.
The math is straightforward. The standard deviation of the difference between one shot with each club is the square root of the sum of their two variances. If your 6 iron varies by 9 yards and your 7 iron varies by 9 yards, the combined standard deviation is about 13 yards. You need at least that much carry gap before the two clubs reliably produce different distances.
Example. A 12 yard gap between two clubs that each scatter 8 yards is not a real gap, because on any given swing either club can produce either number. A 15 yard gap between two clubs that scatter 4 yards is plenty.
This is why carry is the right basis, never total. Total distance is carry plus a bounce and a roll that the monitor never watched. On a simulator, the bounce depends on the firmness the software models. Your gapping math should use the number the monitor actually measured.

Fit your strategy to your dispersion, not to your one best swing.
Map the bag off your normal strike, not your ceiling. When you pick a club, you are picking the whole cloud, not just the center of it. Aim where the normal miss still plays. If your 7 iron scatter is 8 yards and there is water 6 yards short of the pin, the pin is not the target.
Tight gapping matters most inside 120 yards, where you actually attack pins. Out at 215 yards, dispersion is so wide that a bigger gap barely costs you. Spend your gapping precision on the scoring clubs.
Strike first. Watch two numbers: smash factor settling into its club band (driver 1.45 to 1.50, 7 iron around 1.33, wedges 1.18 to 1.25, well struck bands anchored to Trackman tour averages) and ten ball carry dispersion at one target.
Expect the carry number to drop while the dispersion tightens when a strike fix works. This feels wrong. It feels like you are losing distance. But the number you have been quoting was a ceiling, not a playing number, and a playing number is the one you can aim with. That feeling of losing distance is the fix working.
If smash factor is already in the band but scatter is still wide, the issue is delivery consistency (path, face, or low point) rather than strike quality. Not every unit can show you that: club delivery data is measured by camera units with their markers on and by Trackman's radar and camera, while budget radar units estimate or omit it. What is a good shot dispersion for a 7 iron?
It depends on your level. Quantified Golf publishes a rule of thumb of 5 percent of carry for full swings, which works out to about 8 yards on a 150 yard 8 iron. In the 2026 Today's Golfer iron test, a test professional on a Foresight GCQuad measured 7 iron carry scatter of 0.82 to 2.65 yards across every model tested, roughly 0.5 to 1.4 percent of carry. Most golfers sit somewhere between that test professional and the 5 percent guideline. Your own measured scatter is the number that matters.
