Every gapping calculator on the internet judges your gaps against a fixed number, usually 10 to 15 yards. That is the wrong question. Two clubs are different shots when the gap between them is wider than how much those two clubs scatter, and scatter is personal. A 12 yard gap between two clubs that each vary by 8 yards is not a real gap, because on any given swing either club can produce either number. A 15 yard gap between two clubs that vary by 4 yards is plenty. Your scatter is the missing input, and only your own shots can supply it.

One carry number per club is enough to start. A gapping read tells you where your bag has holes. It cannot tell you whether your clubs are the clubs you think they are, and that is the other half of every distance argument in golf. Pick your set and see what the number on the sole actually means.

That variation is a standard deviation, and the standard deviation of the difference between one shot with each club is the square root of the sum of their two variances. If your 6 iron varies by 9 yards and your 7 iron varies by 9 yards, it takes about 13 yards of gap before those two are reliably different clubs, whatever the averages say.
That number is worth nothing if it is invented, so this page never invents one. A club earns a measured scatter when you supply three or more carries for it, which in practice means importing a session rather than typing a yardage card. Every flag says which of three bases it used: measured when both clubs brought their own shots, mixed when one did, and assumed when neither did.
The assumption, when it has to be used, is 5 percent of that club's carry. That figure comes from Quantified Golf, which publishes it as a full swing rule of thumb and works it through an 8 yard spread on a 150 yard 8 iron, and it matches our own sim sessions, ten shots a club, one golfer, which ran 3.3 to 6.0 percent on irons and wedges. Now the other side of it: in the 2026 Today's Golfer iron test, a test professional hitting a Titleist Pro V1 on a Foresight GCQuad measured 7 iron carry scatter of 0.82 to 2.65 yards across every model tested, which is about 0.5 to 1.4 percent of carry. A professional striker scatters a quarter of what the assumption says, and most golfers reading this are somewhere in between.
That spread is why an assumed flag on this page is a question and not a verdict. A factor of four in the assumption lands on either side of most real gaps, so it cannot settle a close pair and this page does not pretend otherwise. Manual entry buys you a question. Coverage is read the same way. Instead of lining your carries up as a ladder of single numbers, each club becomes a band, its carry plus or minus its own scatter, and the bag is walked a yard at a time. A yardage no band reaches is a hole. A yardage three bands all reach is three clubs competing for one shot. Holes narrower than 5 yards are ignored, because a 4 yard hole is a number you cover by taking a little off a club rather than a gap in your bag. That 5 yard floor is a coaching rule, not a measurement: it is the rule this site's author publishes, and it is the rule that flags his own bag in the sample.
Everything here is carry. If your export has a total distance column, this page ignores it and says so. Total is carry plus a bounce and a roll your launch monitor did not watch, it calculated, and the roll assumption changes with turf, slope and how the software was set up. Gapping a bag on total is gapping it on a model of ground you were not standing on.
There is no answer, and any page that hands you one is guessing. The club stamped 7 is a different club in every set, and the table below is the proof. These are the makers' own published lofts, read off their own spec pages in August 2026. Lofts drift year to year and any fitter will bend a set on request, so treat this as a starting point and check your own.

Read the 7 iron column. It runs from 28 to 35 degrees, which is more than a club and a half of loft on clubs that all have the same number stamped on them. Two golfers with identical swings and different sets carry it different distances, and neither of them is doing anything wrong.
One thing that column shows which almost nobody says out loud: loft creep only went one way. The weakest 7 iron on this list is a single degree off the classic 34, while the strong end sits six degrees away. Sets did not spread in both directions from a middle. They moved down, and the ones that did not moved nowhere. So a golfer whose 7 iron carries 150 is not necessarily behind a golfer whose 7 iron carries 165; they may simply be holding a club that a previous generation would have called a 5 iron.
Less loft is why a strong lofted club goes further. It is also why it launches lower, spins less and lands flatter, which is the part the distance charts never mention and the part that decides whether the ball holds a green. It reads the numbers you give it today and forgets them the moment you close the tab. It cannot tell you whether your 7 iron carry has been drifting since May, whether last month's gap is this month's gap, or whether the club you just changed actually changed anything. Those are all questions about your game over time, and answering them takes something that remembers the last bag you measured. Yes, with one honest limit. Indoors the ball is stopped a few feet after impact, so the carry on your screen is a flight model running from the launch numbers your device measured rather than a distance anything watched. Gapping still works, because the relationship between your clubs is what matters and the model applies the same physics to all of them. What you should not do is take an indoor carry outside as a target yardage. This page will not convert them for you, because it does not know your altitude, your air or your ball, and a made up correction is worse than none.
Three is the minimum before this page will compute a scatter for a club, because a standard deviation from one or two shots is noise rather than a measurement. Five to ten is where it starts being worth trusting, and the page shows the shot count next to every club so you can weigh it yourself. Include your mishits. A carry average built only from the ones you flushed describes a golfer who does not exist.
