Spin axis is the tilt of the ball's spin: 0 degrees is dead straight, positive numbers curve right (a fade or slice for a right hander), negative numbers curve left. It is created almost entirely by the gap between your club face angle and your swing path at impact. That one number is your ball flight's honesty meter, and it's the first thing to read after start line.
A golf ball only ever spins around one axis. When that axis is level, all the spin is backspin and the ball flies straight. When the axis tilts, the lift force tilts with it and the ball curves toward the low side of the axis. TrackMan defines spin axis as the tilt angle of the ball's rotational axis relative to the horizon, measured just after the ball leaves the face, and it does not change during flight. So a +8 reading isn't "some slice spin mixed in." It's the whole flight's curvature, decided at impact.

Working guidance, not laws. Ball speed scales the damage: the same tilt curves a 108 mph drive much farther offline than a 90 mph one, so faster players need tighter axis numbers.
The axis tilts when your club face points somewhere other than where your path is traveling. Face open to the path tilts it positive; face closed to the path tilts it negative. The bigger the gap, the bigger the tilt. Two illustrative patterns you'll recognize on any sim screen:
The driver slice. Path swinging 3 degrees left of the target (over the top), face 3 degrees open to the target. The face is 6 degrees open to the path: the ball starts near where the face points, then the heavily tilted axis (often +8 to +12 on a pattern like this) takes over and the ball falls two fairways right. The fix conversation is a path and face gap conversation, not a "swing harder" conversation.
The hooked long iron. Path 4 degrees in to out, face square to the target but 4 degrees closed to that path. Axis tilts negative (a mid single digit reading), and a 4 iron that started right of target dives left of it. Same math, opposite sign.
Strike. Off center contact with a driver tilts the axis through gear effect: a heel strike adds slice tilt, a toe strike adds hook tilt, even with a perfectly neutral face and path. This is the classic trap of rebuilding your swing to fix a "path problem" that was actually a contact problem. Camera based monitors (Uneekor, Foresight) show strike location directly. Radar units (Garmin R10, Mevo+) can't see the face, so put foot spray on it for ten balls before you draw conclusions. Strike first, then path.
Spin axis responds to the same measured loop as everything else in your bag: baseline, one change, re-measure.

Same phenomenon, different bookkeeping. The ball only ever has one spin rate around one tilted axis. Older displays split that into backspin and side spin numbers; most modern monitors report total spin plus the axis tilt in degrees, which is the more useful pair for diagnosing flight. If your monitor shows side spin in rpm, a rough translation is that more side spin means more axis tilt.
